Need to Know: Troy Recreation Department Summer Camps

Registration is open for the more than 45 summer camps offered through the Troy Parks and Recreation Department.

The Troy Recreation Department is offering a wide variety of more than 45 summer camps and programs with both full- and half-day sessions available for kids ages 3 to 18. The camps are conveniently located throughout the city and priced to fit every budget. Financial assistance scholarships are also available for those who qualify.

Registration is available online, and you can also register in person at the Community Center by stopping by the Recreation Desk. Full payment is due at the time of registration. Cash, check, Mastercard or Visa are accepted as payment in person. Check out the attached pdf file for the entire summer schedule.

All of the Troy Recreation Camps include experienced staff and coaches, supplies and a camp t-shirt (for most programs). Depending on the camp, transportation, lunch and entry fees may be included as well. Camp staff is hired based on their education, character, knowledge and experience working with children. All staff have passed the City of Troy’s background check as well as staff orientations, and some staff have basic first aid training. Some Summer Camps also offer extended care before and after scheduled camp hours.

2012 Summer Camps:

Art Camp, ages 6-11: Kick off your creative side in this jammed packed mini-camp.  Campers will be exposed to different mediums; acrylics, watercolor, pastels, pen & ink, students try out different approaches to art.  All materials included in fee.

Art Projects, ages 6-11: Two mini one-day classes (Paper Making and Scratch Board) are for kids to explore new ways to grow their creative side!  Fee includes all materials.

Amazing Art, ages 6-13: A wonderful art program that explores different mediums, beads, mixed media, paint and more.  Tools and materials provided by instructor.  Material fee is separate.  Each new session has new and exciting projects. 

Amazing Race Camp, ages 7-13: Campers will have the chance to “race around Troy” and each day will be a new destination with an exciting adventure waiting for them.  Campers will work together to solve challenges at each destination. Sports, group games and team building round out the activities for this energizing camp.

Cartooning, ages 8-13: Learning to draw is lots of fun, especially if you’re creating silly characters, funny expressions, and drawing sequences that tell jokes. All material fees included.

FAME Camp, ages 4-12:   Fame is the name, performing arts is the game - a week-long odyssey into the world of jazz, dance, theatre, music and art.  Children master the foundations of performing arts discipline and then combine these disciplines into an exciting finished product.  The week culminates with an on-stage “stupendous” performance for parents  that highlights all this learning. 

Jr. Sportsters, ages 5-8: Created just for the sports-minded campers will be introduced to sports such as soccer, basketball, kickball and more.  Emphasis is on the development of teamwork and sportsmanship.  Walk to and from the Family Aquatic Center for swimming daily.

Lego Camps, ages 6-13: Build and modify different vehicles including everyday vehicles, concept cars, and construction machines using unique LEGO kits.  This fun approach to engineering principles has participants learning about friction, forces, motion and aerodynamics.  Students start developing problem solving and communication skills.  All materials included. 

Pottery-Teen, ages 14+:    Allow your creativity to flow while designing various clay projects.  Each week learn new techniques and explore new methods.  Tools and materials provided by instructor.     Material fee is separate. 

Pottery-Youth, ages 6-13: An exciting class that emphasizes creativity and fun.  Learn different techniques each week while building your clay skills.  First three weeks work on project and glaze on the final week.  Fee includes tools, clay, glazing supplies and firing.   Material fee is separate

Premiere Dance classes, ages 3-13: Short summer session is a great opportunity to see if your child is interested in the art of dance.

Preschool Camps, ages 3-5: will include a variety of activities such as free play, circle time, outdoor play time, music and movement activities.  Camps are lead by Rainbow Preschool instructors.  Fee includes: instruction, supplies and camp t-shirt (ratio: 1:9).

Robot/Science Camps, ages 6-12 – choose between four sessions:

  • Hyper Peppy Robotics: Build and take home your own Hyper Peppy Robot.  Its sound activated, use the clap of your hands to get it moving. See, first-hand the many gears, circuit board, microphone, and it’s easy to assemble mechanical drive system.  You will also get to build other robots as a part of a small group. 
  • Engine Building- Engineer Architect Creativity Workshop: Hands-On activities working with an advanced, three dimensional construction kit that is yours to keep and take home, build and design your own creations.  You will also get your own 3-volt geared motor.  Build a vehicle, chopper, robot, buildings and much more. 
  • Model Airplanes- Bridge Building and Electronic Gadgets: Build your own rubber-powered model airplane.  Use your model as a learning tool in aerospace education, or just have fun building a sound airplane that actually flies when assembled.  Have fun designing and building model bridges.  Learn simple engineering skills and build 6 electronic projects. 
  • Follow Me Robot: How would you like to build a robot that has four built-in microphones? It will detect the sound source and in turn it will move and turn accordingly.  It is your own robot to build and take home.    Learn about the different gears and sensors as you build it. 

Rock-N-Roll Camp, ages10-17: Calling all Rock Stars - find out what it is like to be in a real band.  Camp is designed for the beginner - intermediate musicians with three months experience on guitar, bass, drums (snare), and keyboards. Singers also welcome.  Campers split up into 3-5 person bands, daily instrument instruction, rehearsals (jam sessions), music theory, the history of rock ‘n’ roll, stage presence.  Each group selects songs to perform on Friday at a live performance for friends and family. 

Safety Town, ages 5-6: Keeping our kids safe is important to every parent.  Safety Town takes on the challenge by introducing kids to the rules of the road in our mock town.  Fire, electrical, playground, prescription drugs, household and stranger safety are covered.  Videos, songs, a field trip (bus safety) and visits from the fire and police department pack this fast paced week. 

Sportsters, ages 7-13: All Sports-All Fun!  Created for the sports-minded campers, a variety of sports are played daily.  Develop sports confidence while improving sports skills in a team environment!  Soccer, kickball and basketball are just a few of the sports that will be played.  Walk to the Family Aquatic Center for swimming daily.

Survivor Camp, ages 7-12: This very popular camp is modeled after the popular television reality show - with one missing element, no one gets voted off.  Campers divided into five tribes and work together toward earning the “Top Tribe” award.  Action packed week - tribes challenged in sports, group and individual contests, arts and crafts, mind games, weekly special events and two trips to the Aquatic Center each week.  

Troy Sports Camps, ages 3-18:  Choose from a variety of sports including Athletic Trainers, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Extreme Recess, Fast Pitch Softball, Football, Golf, Gotta Dance, Lacrosse, Soccer, Speed & Agility, Swim, Track & Field, Volleyball, and Wrestling.

Water Warriors, ages 7-13: Does your child love the water or even dream of being a lifeguard some day? This is the perfect camp involving water-themed activities and contests, speakers on water rescue/safety, a pizza party, a field trip to an area Water Park, and a lot of non-structured swimming time each day.
