VIDEO: Sen. Carl Levin Visits Troy High, Congratulates YouTube Space Lab Competition Winners

Troy High School juniors Dorothy Chen and Sara Ma were named global winners of the competition last month.

Judges named juniors Dorothy Chen and Sara Ma global winners of the YouTube Space Lab competition last month, and on Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Sen. Carl Levin stopped by a Troy High School AP Biology class for an hour to personally congratulate the winners and speak to students.

The experiment Chen and Ma designed asks: “Could alien superbugs cure disease on Earth?” Chen and Ma proposed sending the bacillus subtillis bacteria to the space station to see if introducing different nutrients and compounds – like fertilizer and nitrogen – can block their growth in the hopes of providing new tools to fight germs on Earth (see attached YouTube video).

As winners, Chen and Ma will see their experiment performed in space, including traveling to Japan to watch the launch in person.
