Sy Thai Opens, Brings Vang Family Home in Troy
'We love this town and we saw this road grow up,' said co-owner Fa Vang.
For Sy and Fa Vang, opening the new Sy Thai restaurant in Troy this past weekend wasn't quite as simple as just going home.
The 20-year Troy residents operate the Sy Thai in Birmingham which has served foodies since 1993, and another Sy Thai in St. Clair Shores. They said they have always wanted to work on Big Beaver Road, which is the location of the newest Sy Thai, in Kilmer Plaza.
The recession may have kept the family from opening sooner in Troy, but if opening weekend business has been any indication, Fa Vang said, it will be there for a long time.

"We love this town and we saw this town grow up," said Fa Vang, adding that she now has children in Troy Schools who have grown up to work in the new restaurant. "I remember when Big Beaver Road was nothing like you see now. It's great and we're so excited."
Sy Thai was named named best Thai restaurant in 2012 by Hour Magazine, and the Vangs plan to open another restaurant in Midtown Detroit later this year. Specialties include vegetarian curries, gluten-free dishes, beef a la Thai, and roasted duck.
