Troy High School Will Represent State At National Science Bowl
Troy Students won the National Science Bowl Regional Competition, allowing them to secure a spot in the national finals in Washington, D.C.

A team of Troy high school students won the regional competition for the 2018 National Science Bowl Feb. 17 and will now compete in the NSB National Finals this spring in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), who sponsors the NSB, announced Tuesday.
The NSB encourages thousands of American high school and middle school students to compete in “a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math.”
“The National Science Bowl continues to be one of the premier academic competitions across the country and prepares America's students for future successes in some of the world’s fastest growing fields in science, technology, and engineering,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said in a statement. “I am proud to oversee a department that provides such a unique and empowering opportunity for our nation’s students, and I am honored to congratulate Troy High School in advancing to the National Finals, where they will continue to showcase their talents as the top minds in math and science,” Perry added.

Troy High School won its regional competition, and advances to the nationals in D.C. The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Prizes for the top two high school teams for the 2018 NSB will be announced at a later date, according to the Department of Energy. Last year’s top two high school teams won all-expenses paid trips to Alaska, where they studied glaciers, marine and avian biology, geology, and plate tectonics.
The National Science Bowl began in 1991, and has seen over 275,000 American students compete. Yesterday’s announcement came via Twitter, with a congratulatory Tweet to the Troy competitors.
