OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (July 24, 2023) –
During the month of July, Oakland Community
Health Network (OCHN) is joining nationwide efforts in celebrating Disability Pride Month and
the 33rd anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Disability Pride Month gives recognition to and honors the achievements and experiences of
the disability community. Initially started to celebrate the anniversary of the ADA, Disability
Pride Month acknowledges all disabilities, regardless of the barriers that still exist.
In addition to Disability Pride Month, this July also celebrates the 33rd anniversary of the ADA.
33 years ago on July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into legislation,
and it remains an integral part of civil rights legislation. The Act prohibits discrimination and
guarantees that people living with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else,
including employment opportunities, the purchasing of goods and services, and participation in
State and local government programs and services.
OCHN is participating in this national acknowledgement of both observances on social media
by using the hashtags #ADA33 and #DisabilityPride.
