West Bloomfield High School is Getting Political

"Obama or Romney?" may be the hottest political topic in West Bloomfield this weekend, but local civics and government students are working to ensure that conversation continues through the next four years.

West Bloomfield High School hosted a campaign rally Friday during all lunch hours, offering several students who had won a previous contest the opportunity to prepare speeches on behalf of their preferred U.S. presidential candidate — the incumbent President Barack Obama, or challenger Gov. Mitt Romney.

Though the majority of speakers were well younger than the minimum voting age, the diversity of topics addressed during their three-minute speeches reflected a well-informed basis. 

The rally was just another example of the way that WBHS students have become involved in the Nov. 6 general election — in late September, students helped coordinate a voter registration drive at the school. Teachers are also running a school-wide presidential election on Monday at school during all lunches and announcing the results at the end of the day.
