Downriver Detroit Cadets Honored for Community Service in Wyandotte

The Downriver Detroit Cadets, formerly called the Wyandotte Explorers, is the largest Police Youth Cadet Program in the country.

Three participants of the Downriver Detroit Cadets were honored Monday night at the regularly scheduled city council meeting.

Rebekah Woytowicz, 20; Joe Hosler, 19 and Chris Arnoldy were recognized for their community service in the City of Wyandotte.

Each cadet received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for achieving more than 100 hours of community service within a 12-month period.

Woytowicz, a major, is the highest ranking cadet in Michigan and the highest ranking female cadet in the U.S. She plans to study forensic science in college.

Hosler was accepted in to the program in 2010 and has accrued more than 250 hours of community service. He received the second highest honor for volunteer service--making Hosler the first gold level award winner from the program.

Arnoldy said he hopes his service with the program will one day help him land his dream job with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Wayne County Prosecutors Louisa Papalas and Michael Woodyard; Wayne County Deputies Chris Kowalske and Rick Gunny Meredith and Amber Phillips serve as volunteer instructors and mentors in the program, and were also recognized with the award.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging United States citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States through presidential recognition to live a life of service, according to award website.
