Xcel Hike Would Raise MN Electric Bills Nearly 20 Percent: Report

The rate hike is needed to fund infrastructure investments, according to Xcel Energy.

MINNEAPOLIS — Xcel Energy filed a proposal with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission Monday to raise the price of electricity for residents by 19 percent over three years, according to a new report.

"This is a pretty straightforward rate case," Chris Clark, the president of Xcel Energy's Minnesota division, told the Star Tribune.

"It's really focused on the poles and wires part of our business and making the necessary infrastructure investments."

Under the proposal, the average Minnesota customer would pay up to $21 more per month from 2022 through 2024.

Thanks to energy shortages, Minnesotans will already see larger heating bills in the coming months. The average Xcel Energy customer in Minnesota can expect to pay an increase of about $165 over the course of the winter, as Patch previously reported.
