According to Deacon Mark Ertl, the Hamburg Steinway was built in Germany in 1976 and purchased in London by Richard Carpenter (of The Carpenters). He used it for two years, then sold it to the record producer Phil Ramone. Phil is known for producing the very first CD, (Billy Joel’s 52nd Street) as well as producing Frank Sinatra’s Duets albums. The piano has been played by Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Quincy Jones and leased for a time by Andre’ Previn. When Phil traded the piano for a Yamaha with digital capacity, the Steinway ended up in a warehouse in the Twin Cities. That is where the Piano Committee of Shepherd of the Valley found it. They were very taken with the inherent beauty of the instrument, purchased it, and retained the services of Mark Bunker, Piano Technician for the Ordway, for its refurbishment. Mark restrung the entire piano and replaced all the pads, silencers, etc.
