Officials Envision Messy Future for Burnsville Landfill

Plans to clean up a long-closed local landfill are no more.

A plan to eventually redevelop property comprising a long-closed local landfill is no more, placing the site at the center of a messy cleanup.

Because the $60 million renovation deal fell through, The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said Thursday that it would begin the process to place it on the EPA's Superfund list, according to Fox 9.

"Putting the Freeway Landfill on the Superfund list means anyone who contributed trash to the landfill is responsible for the cost of the cleanup," the story says. "The attempts to track down and collect payments from trash haulers, businesses and governments will likely result in multiple lawsuits and an even bigger final cost."
