Ukelele Playing Businessman Dies at 98

Otto S. Hirschoff, of Lakeville, had a green thumb, a good golf swing and a light spirit.

Otto S. Hirschoff, of Lakeville, passed away on Jan. 14, 2013 at the age of 98. 

Hirschoff was born to Alvin and Rose (Ormianer) Hirschoff on March 28, 1914.

During his working years, Otto owned The Ski Den sporting goods store near the University of Minnesota campus. He operated the business for 33 years. He is described as an avid golfer and a skilled vegetable gardener, whose cherry tomatoes were sold locally at Byerly's and Valley Natural Foods in Burnsville. He also loved to sing and play the ukelele.

"You couldn't attend a get together with Otto without having a sing-along to the 'old time' songs of the 20s and 30s," His family writes.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Gust, Ed, Mary and Erney.

Hirschoff is survived by his loving wife, Anita; children, Julie (Justin) Horton and Jeff (Janell) Hirschoff; grandchildren, Kaia Horton, Ava and Oakley Hirschoff; also by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service for Hirschoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at Southmetro Vineyard Church in Burnsville, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
