Duluth's winter plow crew battles cold and stacked storms (wdio.com) — Duluth’s street maintenance team is straining to keep up with this winter’s frequent, intense storms while protecting fragile streets and Lake Superior from excess salt. Operations coordinator Geoff Vukelich explains why stacked storms force plows back to priority-one routes, why some side streets wait longer, and how staffing limits and environmental rules shape what residents see on their roads.
   

2. Winter recreation returns in full swing (wdio.com) — Duluth is in for a snowy season, with WDIO meteorologists expecting around 95 inches and local ski hills and shops already buzzing. DNR buys more than 5,000 acres in northern St. Louis County (duluthnewstribune.com) — From Duluth, state officials announced the purchase of 5,120 acres in northern St. Louis County, mostly north of Lake Vermilion, to expand public forests and habitat. The DNR says the deal, part of one of its largest recent acquisitions, will boost recreation access, protect water and wildlife, and support sustainable timber across northern Minnesota.
