I’ve been wondering about this for a little bit now. It’s one thing to say that a team needs to bring in qualified GM candidates for a rigorous interview process. It’s quite another matter to know what kind of questions the Vikings’ ownership is asking of the GM candidates.
The Vikings have finished their initial round of interviews for the prospective general managers. One has to think we’ll soon learn who Minnesota’s owners prefer for the final deliberations. I’ve got my money on John Spytek being in there, but what do I know? Very little. There will likely be 2 or 3 in the final cluster.

Jeff Diamond, a former NFL general manager and therefore someone who does know something, shared his opinion recently on Vikings Territory. Here is a brief snippet:
Therein lies the key. Football, a sport that is continually future oriented, must rely on some past examples of success to look into the future. Can past success as, say, a high-level scout or cap guru translate to future success as a GM? Nobody truly knows.
One thing the team will likely do is try to determine what the final batch thinks about current dilemmas facing the team.
Indeed, I imagine a second interview will involve getting involved in the nitty-gritty. What will the new GM do at quarterback? Can the current team be turned into a legit competitor sooner rather than later? Who will get the axe on defense? All of these questions may be under consideration. At the very least, these questions will be preeminent for whoever is hired. It’s plausible that the owners will be looking for some reasonably firm ideas about how this will shake out before making the hire.
Furthermore, one wonders if the head coach interviews that have happened will be used as an evaluative tool for the GMs. Perhaps the Vikings will turn to their final GM candidates for their thoughts on the those who have already been interviewed. After all, the team is placing a high priority on collaboration and clear communication. Being able to articulate how one might work alongside a HC could be appealing at this particular moment.
The first GM hire has already happened. The New York Giants have settled on Joe Shoen. Expect other teams to follow suit. Vikings fans will know soon who the general manager in Minnesota will be.
