📰 News we're reading

1. Eden Prairie Planning Commission considers new Wings Credit Union branch (hometownsource.com) — Eden Prairie’s Planning Commission has recommended approval of a new Wings Credit Union branch in the Cub Foods parking lot on Den Road, potentially opening by summer 2026 if the City Council agrees. The 3,271-square-foot branch would add shared parking, a drive-thru ATM with remote teller service, bike access, and replacement trees to offset removals required for construction.

2. Former Eden Prairie Police and Fire chaplain charged in hit-and-run that injured mom and children (kare11.com) — A former volunteer chaplain for Eden Prairie’s police and fire departments has been charged with criminal vehicular operation after an August hit-and-run that injured a mother and her children in a Mitchell Road crosswalk. Eden Prairie police say a 2-year-old girl was critically hurt, and the chief publicly expressed support for the family while confirming the chaplain no longer serves the departments.

3. Blaine man charged in Eden Prairie apartment garage scooter thefts (eplocalnews.org) — Eden Prairie police have charged a Blaine man in connection with two electric scooter thefts from an underground garage at an Eden Prairie apartment complex in late November 2024. Prosecutors allege surveillance video, prior trespass issues, and a previously stolen vehicle link him to the incident, with a first court appearance set for Dec. 30 in Minneapolis.

4. Tolkkinen: Without funding, state's new child protection law will land hard on rural counties (startribune.com) — A state child protection reform championed by metro advocates is raising concerns about how it will be implemented and funded in rural Minnesota, and Eden Prairie Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn has pressed colleagues on that issue. The new law aims to keep more Black and other overrepresented families together, but counties warn they may lack both money and culturally appropriate services to meet its mandates.

5. Principals are warning of the new impacts of ICE raids (districtadministration.com) — Eden Prairie families are among those feeling heightened anxiety as principals nationwide report student absences, bullying, and fear tied to stepped-up federal immigration enforcement. A recent Minnesota school board meeting drew an unusually large Eden Prairie crowd upset over the district’s communication about ICE activity, especially given its sizable Somali community and concerns about student safety.
