Champions: Edina High School Boys Golf Team Wins State Title

The Hornets finished as runners-up in last year's state tournament but went one better last week to get their hands on the title.

EDINA, MN — The Edina High School boys golf team won its sixth state championship last week to avenge last year’s second-place finish in the tournament.

The Hornets triumphed on the back of a tied-for-tournament-best performance from senior Jack Wetzel, who was one of three golfers to finish with a score of 140, four strokes under par, according to the Minnesota State High School League.

Edina won the Class AAA state tournament with a score of 589 across two rounds of play. Second-placed Spring Lake Park finished 14 strokes behind Edina, while third-placed Alexandria was 23 strokes back.

Edina’s single-round scores of 298 strokes and 291 strokes were the two lowest scores posted by any of the eight schools involved in the state tournament, MSHSL statistics show. Stillwater was the only other school to post a score of under 300 strokes in either of its two rounds.

Edina High Student Signs NIL Deal; First In MN To Earn Endorsement

The Hornets’ state title is the program’s its sixth overall in boys golf, adding to triumphs in 1954, 1970, 1987, 2014 and 2019, according to the MSHSL.

Edina High School boys golf team at the 2022 state tournament:

  • Jack Wetzel — 140 strokes — Tied for 1st
  • Charlie Nasby — 149 strokes — Tied for 14th
  • Torger Ohe — 150 strokes — Tied for 19th
  • Ben Sanderson —152 strokes — Tied for 29th
  • Owen Nielsen — 153 strokes — Tied for 33rd
  • Andrew Cavender — 156 strokes — Tied for 41st
