Edina Baker Donates $3,100 to Fund Moose Research

Edina bakery owner Robin Johnson, best known for her delicious creations at Sweet Retreat Cupcake Boutique, recently donated several thousand dollars to fund moose research through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). 

Johnson announced plans for the cupcake-fueled fundraiser back in January, with every cupcake sold on Feb. 9 creating a $1 donation to the project. She also raised funds through a website, SaveMinnesotaMoose.org. The effort raised $3,100 in total to help fund research into why Minnesota's moose population is declining, which Johnson donated recently.

"As stewards of Minnesota's wildlife, we all need to pitch in because there is not adequate funding to provide more scientific tools needed to understand  why the Moose could quickly end up on the Endangered Species list, or vanish from our state's wilderness altogether," Johnson said, prior to the event.

DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr reportedly called Johnson to thank her following the donation, according to a release from the DNR. Landwehr then stopped by Sweet Retreat to purchase a dozen of Johnson's baked treats.

According to the DNR, the organization captured and collared 31 adult moose this winter as part of the multi-year project to determine why the creatures are dying at unusually high rates in northeastern Minnesota.
