Edina High School Ranked 2nd Best in Minnesota

It's been quite an award-winning week for .

Only two days after learning 10th-grade English teacher , the high school has been ranked second best in the state by U.S. News & World Report.

In the regular ranking of high schools across the country—the last list was released in December 2009—Edina was only outpaced by nearby Southwest High School. The overall evaluation ranks Edina High School as the 234th best in the country.

Principal Bruce Locklear said Edina High School staff is excited "to be recognized for this honor."

"It truly recognizes the hard work and dedication of our staff and students," Locklear said. "Additionally, it represents the guidance and support of our school board."

While the ranking was definitely a positive one, Locklear said it also provides staff with an opportunity to evaluate the next steps the high school needs to take to improve the learning experience for Edina students.

"One thought is around evaluating the IB program as one more means for college readiness," he ssaid.

Neighboring school district on the list, while , and Eden Prairie High School was named 20th.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 22,000 schools across the country, awarding gold silver and bronze medals to the top ranked places. EHS received a gold medal in the most recent ranking, an honor reserved for the top 500 schools in the nation. Last time around, Edina High School received a silver medal.

The rankings were determined by analyzing high schools based on student performance on state assessments, taking into account scores of disadvantaged students (low-income, Hispanic and black) who tend to perform lower on such tests. Schools were then ranked nationally in terms of college readiness, based on student success in advanced placement and international baccalaureate programs.
