EDINA, MN — Edina is set to throw its first-ever Juneteenth celebration this weekend.
The city’s inaugural Juneteenth Community Celebration is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Centennial Lakes Park.
The free, family friendly event will feature education and entertainment, including music, kids activities, and book giveaways, according to city officials. Food vendors will also be at the event.

Live performances are due to start with a reading at 11 a.m. on the Maetzold Amphitheatre stage, followed by performers Carolyne Naomi, Tre. Charles, 4 Tones and 29:11 International Exchange.

There will be readings about the importance of Juneteenth at the start of every hour at the amphitheater and every half-hour on the pathway between Hughes Pavilion and the amphitheater, officials said.
Watercolor artist Arianne Zager will paint a mural on the pathway during the Juneteenth celebration, according to the city.

Juneteenth is a holiday to commemorate the date in 1865 when word reached the last enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended and they were free.
President Joe Biden signed legislation last year making Juneteenth an official holiday and the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was approved in 1983. Juneteenth is oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.
