Edina Lawyer Jarvis Jones Joins Hennepin County Attorney Race

EDINA, MN — Edina lawyer Jarvis Jones has thrown his hat into the crowded race to become the next Hennepin County attorney, according to reports.

Jones, who is a former president of the Minnesota State Bar Association, announced his candidacy May 5 ahead of a virtual candidate forum, which he did not participate in, Kim Hyatt of the Star Tribune reported.

Jones is the seventh person to enter the race to succeed Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, who is set to retire after serving as the county’s top prosecutor for almost a quarter-century.

He joins Mary Moriarty, a former chief public defender for Hennepin County; Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Saraswati Singh; Paul Ostrow, an Anoka County prosecutor and former Minneapolis City Council member; retired judge Martha Hilton Dimick; attorney and Richfield City Council member Simon Trautmann; and state Rep. Ryan Winkler.

Freeman, 74, served as Hennepin County attorney from 1991-1999 and was re-elected in 2006 when then-Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar ran for U.S. Senate.

Freeman served in the Minnesota Senate in the 1980s and ran two unsuccessful campaigns for governor in 1994 and 1998.

Six of the seven candidates are set to seek the Hennepin County DFL’s endorsement at its convention Saturday, the Star Tribune reports. Ostrow said he believes the office should be nonpartisan, the report states.
