Edina Police Working to Increase Crosswalk Safety

Officers are focused on pedestrian safety at 50th & France, along the Edina Promenade and in crosswalks near Edina parks.

The is in the midst of a two-week initiative focused on crosswalk safety throughout the city.

Sgt. Tim Olson said police are particularly keeping an eye on areas of the city that typically see heavy pedestrian traffic, including 50th & France, the Edina Promenade and crosswalks near Edina parks.

"We want residents and visitors to remain safe and comfortable when using our crosswalks," Olson said.

Police are in the process of educating drivers and pedestrians about crosswalk laws, enforcing them as necessary. Messages are being distributed through flashing roadside message boards on increase awareness, in addition to educational reminders on the 's website and other publications.

Minnesota laws require vehicles to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with no market crosswalk, provided a traffic signal is not in place. Drivers are required to remain stopped until pedestrians have passed the traffic lane.
