Edina's 2012 Election Guide

The candidates, incumbents and issues that will be affecting Edina and Hennepin County.

As we look ahead to November’s elections, Edina Patch is set to bring you the information you need about every race in town. Here's our start on the candidates and issues we'll be covering as November draws near.

Edina City Council

Voters will elect Mayor and two City Council members during the November general election. Edina's municipal elections are nonpartisan and canddiates run for seats at large. Terms for all three positions will last four years, beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

The filing period for candidates begins July 31 and runs through Aug. 14. Mayor Jim Hovland and City Council Members Ann Swenson and Mary Brindle are all up for re-election on Nov. 6.

State Senate District 49

There will be no incumbent for the local Senate seat, following the announced retirement of outgoing legislator Geoff Michel. Keith Downey (R) and Melisa Franzen (DFL) will vie for Edina's seat in the State Senate.

State House District 49A

Similarly to Senate District 49, House District 49A does not have an incumbent. Ron Erhardt (DFL) and Bill Glahn (R) were the only candidates to file for election to the House of Representatives seat.

State House District 49B

Just like Edina's other legislative positions, House District 49B has no incumbent. Terry Jacobson (R) and Paul Rosenthal (DFL) were the only candidates to file prior to the June 5 deadline.

ISSUES

 

Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment

Voters will be asked to decide whether only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.
