Edina Students Win Awards For Work On School Newspaper, Yearbook

Four students on the student newspaper staff earned individual awards, along with the entire Whigrean yearbook staff.

EDINA, MN — Three Edina High School students earned gold medals and several others were recognized for their work on the school’s student newspaper and yearbook.

Staff for the Whigrean, the school’s yearbook, won an All-State Gold award in November from the Journalism Educators of Minnesota.

The yearbook staff followed up that award with a fifth-place finish in the student life story category of the Minnesota High School Press Association’s Gold Medallion awards for "As it unfolds."

Four other Edina students won individual awards from the MHSPA for 2020-21.

Miabella DiLorenzo, Isadora Li and Isabelle Wagener won Gold Medallion awards from the organization after earning first place in the social media reporting category for their submission titled “Edina School Board emergency session.” The team of students live-tweeted an emergency school board meeting convened Nov. 10, 2020, as COVID-19 cases grew within the district.

Dedeepya Guthikonda earned second place in the feature story category for “A look into the CommonBond community.”

Guthikonda, who serves as a managing editor of the Zephyrus, was recently named a U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of two from Minnesota in 2022.

The Minnesota High School Press Association’s Gold Medallion awards honor the best individual work across seven categories. No state convention was held during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization said.
