Reviews:

"For all its chasing and falling and fighting—and the movie supplies a great deal of each—Star Trek Into Darkness is at its best when the Enterprise crew are merely bickering and bantering among themselves: less space opera than soap opera." The Atlantic Full Review

"The conceptual sci-fi of the original series is nowhere to be found, though you might enjoy watching the skinny young actors approximate their counterparts from the 60s; Chris Pine is especially good as Captain Kirk." Chicago Reader Full Review

"Abrams boldly goes into Star Trek Into Darkness, and crushes it again. It's more fun and more intense, without giving less to the characters." Rolling Stone Full Review

Only at the Edina Cinema:

At Any Price

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 75

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 54

Reviews:

"If the story is a bit all over the place—and what the heck is Heather Graham doing in this picture besides looking great?—the solid work from Quaid and Efron helps iron out a few of the bumpy bits." Toronto Star Full Review

"A viewer is constantly aware of how much everyone is striving. It's the cinematic equivalent of a stranger who trips all over themselves in an effort to become your new best friend." Arizona Republic Full Review

"It clumsily showcases an environmental issue—in this case, the corporate strong-arm tactics used to promote GMOs—through routine interpersonal drama." Chicago Reader Full Review

In the House

One sentence plot: A 16-year-old boy insinuates himself into the house of a fellow student from his literature class and writes about it in essays for his French teacher.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 81

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 87

Reviews:

"Savor In the House for its meta-exploration of adolescence, class resentment and suppressed desire, but don't expect much more." Miami Herald Full Review

"The result is endlessly playful, although the rules of the game, in Ozon's hands, could hardly be graver, and what can be at stake, in the act of storytelling, has seldom been more elegantly sketched." New Yorker Full Review

"The dexterity of the actors and their director is not quite enough, and as "In the House" accelerates, it also starts to sputter, piling on incidents and revelations that cause its web of implications to unravel." New York Times Full Review

No Place on Earth

One sentence plot: In October 1942, Esther Stermer, the matriarch of a Jewish family in the Ukraine, leads her family underground to hide from the pursuing Nazis— and stays nearly a year and a half.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 100

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 76

Reviews:

"No Place on Earth is at its most moving when showing us, in close-up, the still-haunted faces of the cave dwellers, many of whom tell their stories to director Janet Tobias' camera." Seattle Times Full Review

"The film is not without its flaws, but the story it tells is both terrifying and inspiring." Arizona Republic Full Review

"The producer's hand is heavy in No Place on Earth, but it ultimately can't sink the inspiring tale of endurance." Philadelphia Inquirer Full Review

Renoir

One sentence plot: Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Gilles Bourdos' lushly atmospheric drama "Renoir" tells the story of celebrated Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, in declining health at age 74, and his middle son Jean, who returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 64

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 80

Reviews:

"One would expect a film about French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir to look beautiful, to be shot in warm, sumptuous colors. And one would not be disappointed in Gilles Bourdos' 'Renoir.'" Arizona Republic Full Review

"Stately to a fault, the film is not enough drama, too much still life." Minneapolis Star Tribune Full Review

"As sensually beautiful as the work of its subject matter, French filmmaker Gilles Bourdos's dreamy biography Renoir is more a series of tableaux than a narrative film." Toronto Star Full Review

The Company You Keep

One sentence plot: A wanted man and former member of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground goes on the run after a journalist (Shia LaBeouf) outs him in this political thriller based on Neil Gordon's novel.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 51

Reviews:

"A drama that's more than a look at what happened to a generation of socially aware hippies whose new drug of choice is likely Lipitor." Toronto Star Full Review

"You wish the movie were a little snappier, but Redford doesn't do snap; slow down with it, and enjoy the chase." Seattle Times Full Review

"What gets revealed should rattle, but it doesn't." Denver Post Full Review

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 84

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 48

Reviews:

"The Great Gatsby is a cool movie, in both the positive and negative sense. You may certainly be impressed, but you may not be moved." Detroit News Full Review

"The best thing about Baz Luhrmann's much-anticipated/much-dreaded The Great Gatsby is that, for all its computer-generated whoosh and overbroad acting, it is unmistakably F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. That is no small deal." New York Magazine Full Review

"The central problem with Luhrmann's film is that when it's entertaining it's not Gatsby, and when it's Gatsby it's not entertaining." The Atlantic Full Review

Peeples

One sentence plot: Sparks fly in the Hamptons when "regular guy" Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) crashes the preppy Peeples family reunion to ask for their precious daughter Grace's (Kerry Washington) hand in marriage.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 69

Reviews:

"The slapstick is often clunky, but Robinson has a sweet jester's disposition that keeps many of the gags from collapsing." Christian Science Monitor Full Review

"Robinson and Washington make a likable couple, and it's nice to see her playing comedy for a change." Leonard Maltin's Picks Full Review

"A meet-the-parents-and-their-rigid-disapproval comedy, with a bit of fish-out-of-water humor tossed in." Miami Herald Full Review

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 83

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 78

Reviews:

"But for all the clanking armies of iron knights on display to dazzle the eager kid in each of us, this summer epic rings hollow. There's no one home inside the suit." Rolling Stone Full Review

"Just like he does with those crummy Sherlock Holmes movies, Downey elevates this rather flimsy material with his sheer presence." Miami Herald Full Review

"Shane Black excels at writing witty, self-referential, pop-infused banter, and there is no actor working today who is better suited to delivering it than Robert Downey Jr." The Atlantic Full Review

Pain & Gain

One sentence plot: Based on the unbelievable true story of a group of personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 69

Reviews:

"It may be the best movie Michael Bay's ever made. And suggests that, if you just kept his toys put away a little longer, someday he might even make a better one." Newark Star-Ledger Full Review

"It's official. Michael Bay, director of the Transformers clobberfests, knows how to make movies about humans, too. The problem is, he thinks humans are robots." Christian Science Monitor Full Review

"It's like a giant sculpture that is so strange and off-putting, it's instantly, intriguingly post-modern. Swept up in the film's pile-driving self-assurance, even Bay-haters may absorb the pain to enjoy the gain." TIME Magazine Full Review

The Big Wedding

One sentence plot: With an all-star cast led by Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, The Big Wedding is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco.

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 80

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 7

Reviews:

"Sarandon, Keaton and De Niro mesh beautifully, fully convincing as a trio of old friends and carting in lots of characterization that would be otherwise lacking in Zackham's rote screenplay." The WrapFull Review

"Many Hollywood films are founded on privilege, but few are as open and nasty about their racism, misogyny, and homophobia. It's a feel-good movie for people who only comfortable around people who look and act just like them." Village Voice Full Review

"The Big Wedding is a would-be screwball comedy that forgets to throw in the screws." Miami Herald Full Review

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 85

Rotten Tomatoes critic score: 98

Reviews:

"The film is drenched in the humidity and salty air of a Delta summer, often recalling the musical, aphoristic cadences of Sam Shepard, who happens to appear in a supporting role." Washington Post Full Review

"One of the most creatively rich and emotionally rewarding movies to come along this year." Los Angeles Times Full Review

"Jeff Nichols' script for Mud is a lot like the Mississippi River that serves as a backdrop for the tale of unrequited love. There are times it is big and powerful and other times when it becomes so serene it's easy to forget the depths that hide below." Fresno Bee Full Review

"When you go to a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic barn dance starring Tom Cruise and his space guns, you expect a little zap with your thoughtful pauses." Chicago Tribune Full Review

"For all the bells and whistles—an electronic score by M83, a screen-busting Imax presentation and Cruise going full throttle—Oblivion feels arid and antiseptic, untouched by human hands." Rolling Stone Full Review

"You start wondering whether director Joseph Kosinski and screenwriters Karl Gajdusek and Michael DeBruyn have any original ideas of their own. And then you realize they don't." Seattle Times Full Review

Reviews:

"This naturalistic drama is ambitious to the point of being unwieldy... But once the story has advanced from one generation to the next and its thematic sweep has become apparent, these flaws seem much more tolerable." Chicago Reader Full Review

"Cianfrance and his sterling cast keep it all together, vanquishing doubt and soap suds. There's a palpable sense of teamwork that brings out the best in all of these players." Toronto Star Full Review

"This is a story about legacy, the sins of the father, the restlessness in our souls. It's powerful, it's bold, it hits you hard." Philadelphia Inquirer Full Review

"A film composed almost entirely of jokes that were much funnier when you read them on Twitter years ago." Entertainment Weekly Full Review

"Scary Movie 5 must be some kind of psychological experiment. Perhaps the filmmakers sat in a lab, rubbing their temples while wondering aloud how awful they could make a movie and still score at the box office." Washington Post Full Review

Rotten Tomatoes viewer score: 86

Reviews:

"Despite a few too many mother-in-law jokes, 'The Croods' nicely makes it clear that even before they had fire, families understood how important it was to cherish and protect each other." Chicago Sun-Times Full Review

"'The Croods' is both brisk and beautiful, and should be sufficiently entertaining for family audiences for whom few such options exist these days." The Associated Press Full Review

"The familiarity of the characters and their dynamics do make the movie feel comfy. You'll probably go into the prehistoric animated comedy thinking you know what it's going to be, and you'll be right." The Pioneer Press Full Review
