The DEA sponsors two national Drug Take Back Days each year. The first event was held in September 2010. The annual event has collected more than 15 million pounds of prescription drugs since, according to the DEA.

Free medication-disposal bags are also available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., and Fire Station No. 1, 6250 Tracy Ave., according to the Edina Crime Prevention Fund.

Old and unused prescriptions pose a risk for accidental poisoning and drug abuse if left around the house, according to officials.
“Most prescription drug abusers say that they obtained their supply of prescription medications from friends and family,” the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. “Properly disposing of prescription medication, such as opioids, can significantly decrease the likelihood of individuals having access to these highly addictive drugs.”

It can also be harmful to discard prescription drugs into the water system or landfills, as they can pollute groundwater and harm fish and wildlife, officials said.
