Nominations Needed For Edina Mayor’s Annual Awards

EDINA, MN — Edina Mayor Jim Hovland is set to hand out a half-dozen awards in April, and he’s looking for people to nominate residents “who have volunteered their time and effort to make significant contributions to the community.”

Nominations are due by 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the mayor’s six commendations: the Service Club Commendation, the Individual Service Commendation, the Outstanding Senior Commendation, the Youth Commendation, the Commendation for Service to Youth, and the Community Involvement Commendation.

Hovland will honor winners individually with “surprise” events in April, as Edina canceled this year’s Volunteer Recognition Reception due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mayor’s Service Club Commendation is given to a club or organization that made “outstanding contributions” to the community, which the individual commendation will honor a resident for “outstanding and exceptional volunteer service,” according to a news release.

The Outstanding Senior Commendation is awarded to a resident over 55, while the Youth Commendation honors a young person "who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the quality of life in the community,” the release states.

A resident or organization “making a positive impact on the lives of Edina youth” will be honored with the Mayor’s Commendation for Service to Youth, while Hovland’s Community Involvement Commendation will recognize a city employee for their “outstanding volunteer service above and beyond his or her position with the City.”
