'One Stop' Edina Surgeon Sanctioned by State Medical Board

The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice sanctioned Dr. Steven Shu for "unprofessional conduct."

The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice has sanctioned Dr. Steven S. Shu—laser surgeon at Edina’s One Stop Medical Center—after a liposuction patient’s skin became necrotic and needed to be treated for cellulitis and sepsis.

The board ruled as “inappropriate” and “unprofessional” Shu’s failure to obtain “surgical privileges at any hospitals to address post-procedure complications for his patients.”

After receiving a lipoabdominoplasty May 2011, a patient of Shu’s returned to his clinic on ten separate dates seeking treatment for complications. In August 2011 the patient was hospitalized and treated by other physicians.

Shu acknowledged that his clinic was not a certified surgical center and that his patient experienced post-operative complications, but he said he treated the patient appropriately.

Shu told the board that “he had made a timely diagnosis of the post-operative infection and treated the condition with appropriate antibiotics, wound care, and frequent follow-up visits,” according to a report.

For the next two years, Shu is ordered to get his procedures and surgeries pre-approved and to meet monthly with a supervising physician who will make quarterly reports to the medical practice board.
