Police Report Only One July 4th Firework Citation Since 2011

Edina Police responded to 47 calls for service in 2012, but reportedly did not write a single citation for fireworks.

The urged locals to this past Independence Day, as they can prove quite dangerous even for trained experts.

One of our local readers asked for a follow-up story on the number of citations issued over the holiday, wondering how aggressively Edina Police enforce the use of fireworks.

"It's a law like any other that needs to be upheld, but most don't believe it is enforced," Deena Long remarked.

Following up on that request, I reached out to the to find out exactly how many citations they typically write over July 4th.

Communications Assistant Kaylin Martin said Edina Police have only issued one citation for fireworks in the last two years.

"In 2011 we received 79 calls-for-service for noises or activities that were reported as possibly being related to fireworks," Martin said.

One citation was issued in 2011 for violation of an ordinance against fireworks. This year saw 47 calls in total, though the department did not issue a single citation.
