EDINA, MN — Edina crews are expected to spend several weeks flushing the city’s hydrants for the start of spring, a project that could cause some residents to see rust-colored water coming from their faucets.

The rust-colored water is safe to drink but could stain clothes, officials said, urging residents to check for signs of discoloration before doing laundry.

Residents who see discolored water when they turn on their faucets should run the water until it is clear.

Edina’s spring hydrant-flushing is meant to clean water mains and minimize the amount of minerals in the city’s water, like iron and manganese, officials said. The annual project also helps workers determine which hydrants need maintenance.
