Teen Charged After Edina Boy Hit By Motorcycle Passing School Bus

EDINA, MN — A Minneapolis teen is accused of hitting and injuring a 10-year-old Edina boy Monday afternoon after riding his motorcycle around the stop arm of a school bus, according to Hennepin County court records.

Terrence J. Mather-Lymon, 18, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of criminal vehicular operation causing substantial bodily harm, court records show.

Police allege Mather-Lymon hit a student in a crosswalk at the intersection of 55th Street West and Xerxes Avenue South around 2:45 p.m. Monday after driving into the opposite lanes of traffic to pass a stopped school bus that had its lights flashing and stop arm extended.

A video from the bus showed the boy was thrown about 30 feet from the crosswalk after being hit by a motorcycle, according to the criminal complaint against Mather-Lymon.

The bus driver saw the crash and thought the boy was “either dead or dying due to the violence of the collision," police said.

Police said the boy was “awake and making eye contact” as paramedics reached him, but he suffered cuts to his head and a “visible leg fracture” that required surgery.

Mather-Lymon told police he was riding a motorcycle for the first time Monday and didn’t have a license, the complaint alleges. He admitted he saw the stopped school bus and its extended stop sign, but he said he saw the school bus driver reach out to motion him to pass, charges state.

Mather-Lymon said he thought he was going about 15-20 mph when he hit the boy in the crosswalk, though the bus driver estimated he was driving about 35 mph, according to the complaint.

Mather-Lymon is due to appear in Hennepin County court Thursday afternoon.
