5 Free or Low Cost Spring Break Activities in Three Rivers Parks

The month of March usually means a week of spring break for Twin Cities schools. Check out a few free or low cost activities happening at area Three Rivers Parks during the 2013 spring break.

Gallery Opening: Representations of Nature

When: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 21

Where: Silverwood Park, 2500 County Rd. E, St. Anthony

Why go: Get artsy during the opening reception and see the new North Hennepin Community College art gallery. The exhibition runs March 14 to April 30.

Sap to Syrup

When: 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 24  

Where: Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton

Why go: Learn about maple syruping history and techniques, see trees tapped and sap collected and cooked.

Cost: Free

 

Gifts of the Maple

When: 3-4 p.m. Sunday, March 24  

Where: Richardson Nature Center, in Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington.

Why go: Find out more about the maple syruping process. Watch sap boil in the evaporator, hike to see tapped trees, and taste real maple syrup. Trails to the trees can be icy, uneven, and moderately maintained; strollers are not recommended.

Spring Into Farming

When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 29

Where: Gale Woods Farm, 7210 County Road 110 W, Minnetrista

Why go: Meeting farm animals and their babies. Taste a farm-fresh treat, make a wool craft and play farm games. Concessions available for an additional fee.

Cost: $5 per person.

 

Take a Nature Hike

Even if snow remains on the ground, winter hiking is still an option at Baker, Lake Minnetonka, Fish Lake, French, Hyland and Eagle Regional Parks. Check out the Three Rivers Parks District website for details on the trail system and winter hiking
