"Traffic was stopped in the right lane and an initial strike with a involved vehicle caused a chain-reaction. The crash caused one fatal injury and one serious injury, both in the Izuzu. The factors for the crash are under investigation."

The driver of a 2016 Izuzu NPR — Miguel Angel Deheza Perez, 42, of Brooklyn Center — was killed in the crash. It is not clear if Perez had his seat belt on, authorities said.

The lone passenger in the Izuzu – a 19-year-old Monticello man — suffered a life-threatening injury, authorities said. He was transported to North Memorial Hospital.

A 2008 Dodge Avenger, 2016 Buick Regal, 2013 KIA Sportage, 2016 Jeep Cherokee, 2020 Ford Transit Van, and 2015 Fright M2 were also involved in the crash.

Conditions were dry at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, authorities said.
