Bears Spotted In Twin Cities Suburb: Police Say 'Do Not Approach'
Do not approach bears, no matter how tempting a photo might be, authorities said.
MAPLE GROVE, MN — A few unexpected visitors have been spotted wandering through Maple Grove lately: black bears.
The Maple Grove Police Department confirmed recent bear sightings in the city and is urging residents to stay calm, avoid interaction, and take steps to prevent attracting the animals.
"Yes, we’ve had actual bear sightings in the city lately!" police said Wednesday in a Facebook post. "While they’re usually just passing through in search of food, here’s how YOU can help keep both our community and the bears safe."

Here’s what to do if you see a bear in Maple Grove:
- DO NOT approach it — no matter how tempting a photo might be.
- Call 911 if the bear poses a threat or causes damage.
- For non-emergency situations, call Hennepin County Dispatch at (952) 258-5321.
- You can also report sightings to the Minnesota DNR online here.

- Remove bird feeders — even squirrel-proof ones.
- Store trash securely indoors until pickup day.
- Never feed wild animals. It’s unsafe and illegal in Minnesota.
Police emphasized that Minnesota's black bears are typically not dangerous if left alone. They won’t be removed or euthanized unless they become a threat to public safety.
"If left alone and not given access to food, they’ll typically move along on their own," officials said.
