Bus Driver Pleads Guilty To Killing Woman, Fleeing Crash: Report

A Maple Grove man was driving several children to school in March 2020 when he killed a pedestrian and fled the scene, police said.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — A Maple Grove man is set to serve prison time after admitting in court last week that he hit and killed a Brooklyn Park woman while driving a school bus with kids on board, according to a report.

Jason Rynders, 35, pleaded guilty to hit-and-run criminal vehicular homicide for his role in a March 2020 crash that killed 45-year-old Devon Lizbeth Doherty, the Star Tribune reports.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said it will seek a four-year prison sentence for Rynders when he is sentenced in January, the report states.

Rynders hit Doherty around 6:45 a.m. March 16, 2020, near the intersection of Humboldt Avenue and Meadowwood Drive, according to the criminal complaint against him.

Surveillance footage from a nearby home showed a portion of the fatal crash, police said. It also showed a driver yelling for Rynders to call 911 before he ran back to the bus — which was carrying children — and left the area, police said.

Footage from the bus showed Rynders pull over and get out of the bus around the time of the crash before dropping off four or five children at school about 45 minutes later, according to the criminal complaint. Rynders was also seen checking under the bus after the crash, police said.
