Crokicurl Rink Opens In Maple Grove’s Central Park

MAPLE GROVE, MN — A recently invented Canadian sports craze has swept down to Maple Grove, with a new rink recently opening in Central Park for residents to learn the game of crokicurl.

The game combines elements of curling with the board game crokinole, with players attempting to glide their curling rocks into the center circle while keeping their opponents away from the scoring zone. The first games of crokicurl are thought to have been played in Winnipeg in 2017.

Maple Grove Parks and Recreation staff hosted a round of games Jan. 22 to teach residents how to play. More than 50 residents showed up, Maple Grove special event coordinator Tanya Huntley told the Star Tribune.

The Central Park crokicurl rink is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and all equipment needed for the game is kept just off the ice. Rules are also posted rinkside for those learning the game.

The octagonal rink is located near Central Park’s southeast parking lot.

Maple Grove’s crokicurl rink is the second to open in the U.S., after the sport made its American debut last year in Altoona, Wisconsin.
