Granite City Receives Patio Recommendation from Planning Commission

Clearing the first hurdle to full approval, received the recommendation from the Maple Grove Planning Commission Sept. 10 to build a new outdoor patio.

The PUD Development Stage Plan request is scheduled to be before the City Council at its Sept. 17, 2012 meeting.

The proposed 1,444 square foot patio, according to planning commission documents, would be located on the north side of the building along Main Street. 

Some of the highlights in the outdoor patio proposal include:

• Large, stone fireplace

• Up to 84 seats, including tables and casual seating around the fireplace

• Seasonal bar

• Partial enclosure with a “wood ceiling, ceiling fans and lighting” and other areas will be “open-air or enhanced with awnings at the tables.”

“Architecturally the plans look very nice with wood beams and a large stone fire place along with significant landscaping,” City Planner Peter Vickerman wrote in documents to the commission.

The only possible issue, he wrote, was the “same situation as with the Redstone proposal earlier this year” regarding site parking. The and Granite City share a parking lot. However, Vickerman noted there are reciprocal parking easements between the two businesses and The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes. Therefore, patrons can park anywhere in The Shoppes area.

During the meeting, one commissioner made a comment about a previous patio at the restaurant. A Granite City representative mentioned they “wouldn’t be spending” the money for the patio if Redstone hadn’t made the request, stating it was a “more defensive” move.

If approved by the city council Sept. 17, construction is anticipated to start in the fall with anticipated opening in Spring 2013.
