Man Jailed, Accused Of Fatal Road Rage Shooting In Maple Grove

A fight between the suspect and the man he's accused of fatally shooting started near St. Cloud, more than 40 miles away, police said.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — A 30-year-old man was in jail Wednesday awaiting charges after police said he shot and killed another driver following a road rage incident that lasted more than 40 miles on Easter Sunday.

William Floyd Haire, 61, of Buffalo, died at 4:53 p.m. Sunday at North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, about two hours after he was shot in the abdomen, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Maple Grove police said Haire was shot during an "altercation between two motorists" near County Road 30 and Garland Lane. Witnesses there said a driver fired a gun toward another car before both fled the area, according to police.

Officers found Haire suffering from a gunshot wound in a car near I-94 and Maple Grove Parkway, and he was taken to the hospital in Robbinsdale where he later died, police said.

The fight between Haire and the 30-year-old man started near St. Cloud, more than 40 miles away, and the drivers “had interaction along the route” to Maple Grove, police said Wednesday.

The 30-year-old man turned himself in at the Maple Grove Police Department, and he was taken to Hennepin County Jail, where he was awaiting charges Wednesday, the department said.

Police did not identify the man Wednesday, as charges had not yet been filed against him.

Maple Grove police called the fatal shooting “a tragic event for the family and loved ones of the victim along with the community.”
