Maple Grove Church Collects 2 Tons For Local Food Shelf

Northwood Church held a "Fill the Truck" event Sunday at Cub to support CROSS Services and the 2022 Minnesota FoodShare Campaign.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — Northwood Church in Maple Grove hosted its annual food drive for CROSS Services on Sunday and collected more than two tons of food for the local organization.

CROSS Services is participating in the 2022 Minnesota FoodShare Campaign, which runs until April 10. CROSS has set a goal of raising a quarter-million dollars and a quarter-million pounds of food for the 2022 March Campaign.

Northwood Church helped push the Rogers-based service organization closer to those goals by collecting 4,664 pounds of food during a “Fill the Truck” event from Sunday at Cub in Maple Grove, according to CROSS Services.

“This is a great way for us as a church to provide for people in our community with food insecurity,” Youth Pastor Nathan Green said in a video on Northwood Church’s Facebook page.

CROSS Services said Sunday that the local community raised more than $106,000 during the first week of the 2022 Minnesota FoodShare Campaign.

The 2021 Minnesota FoodShare Campaign raised more than $13 million and collected almost 6.5 million pounds of food, according to the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, which organizes the initiative.

The 2020 campaign, which was extended after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, raised $21.5 million and collected 7.4 million pounds of food.

The Minnesota FoodShare Campaign helps support almost 300 food shelves throughout the state. The initiative has distributed more than $18 million to food shelves via its Minnesota FoodShare FoodFund since its inception in 1981.

All donations to the March Campaign go to the FoodFund to be distributed to local food shelves, GMCC said.

More than 432,000 people in Minnesota are facing hunger — about 1 of every 13 residents, according to Feeding America. That includes about 147,000 children.

The overall food insecurity rate in Hennepin County stood at 7.7 percent of residents in 2019, Feeding America statistics show. That figure grew to 8.8 percent in 2021, data show.

The food insecurity rate among children in Hennepin County rose from 11.5 percent in 2019 to 13.2 percent in 2021, according to Feeding America.
