Maple Grove To Host Juneteenth Celebration Sunday In Central Park

MAPLE GROVE, MN — Maple Grove is set to celebrate Juneteenth this weekend with music, readings, vendors and more in Central Park.
The city’s Juneteenth celebration is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Sunday with yoga, with a vendor fair, food trucks and music to start at 1 p.m. in the park, according to Maple Grove Parks and Recreation officials.

The event is expected to last until 6 p.m. Sunday.
]Juneteenth is a holiday to commemorate the date in 1865 when word reached the last enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended and they were free.

President Joe Biden signed legislation last year making Juneteenth an official holiday and the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was approved in 1983. Juneteenth is oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.
