MGSH students head to State Debate Tourney

Maple Grove students qualified for two of the debates.

Three Maple Grove Senior High students will compete in the 113th state debate tournament at the University of Minnesota on Jan. 17 and 18.

There are three categories, the Policy Debate, the Lincoln-Douglas Debate and the Public Forum Debate.

Maple Grove students qualified for two of the debates. Jason Fotso will compete in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The topic for this year'sLincoln-Douglas Debate is: “Resolved: Developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict.”

According to Debate Advisor Ronald Dixon, Fotso’s qualification for state was particularly exciting because he was selected to compete in that category as a last minute replacement.

The Public Forum Debate is a team competition. Students Aldrin Clement and Aditya Parikh will compete in this debate as a team. The topic of the Public Forum category is: "Resolved: Development assistance should be prioritized over military aid in the Sahel region of Africa.”

The state debate is the longest running Minnesota State High School League event. It is free and open and to the public.
