New FedEx Building Plans Approved by Maple Grove City Council

Construction could start in summer 2013.

Plans for a new FedEx distribution facility in Maple Grove recently received approval from the Maple Grove City Council.

The request to build the 276,000 square foot warehouse/distribution facility on 85th Avenue received PUD concept and development stage plan approval at the council’s March 4 meeting

Highlights of the proposed upcoming project include, according to documents provided the Maple Grove City Council:

  • Proposed to be built on about 35 acres on 85th Avenue and Revere Lane in Maple Grove. The site is in the gravel mining area and “is in the core of existing and future users.” The address will be 9997 85th Avenue North.
  • Facility will not have public access and includes two entrances, one for employees and one for truck-trailers.
  • The facility will operate continuously 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Exterior will have “insulated pre-cast concrete panels” with texted finish and accent colors.
  • Landscaping plan includes 170 trees, including evergreens to screen the west loading dock along with a small beam to assist in screening.
  • The facility will be a single-story warehouse.

Several councilmembers asked questions regarding the parking and delivery at the proposed FedEX facility, but were pleased with the design. Councilmember LeAnn Sargent said she was “very happy” with the design, Councilmember Karen Jaeger commented the design was “very complimentary to the neighborhood.”

It is anticipated a motion will be drafted to affirm the council’s decision and brought before the council for formal adoption at the March 18.

Construction of the new FedEx facility is anticipated to begin the summer of 2013.

Most of the job positions “will transfer from the existing hub,” a FedEx spokesperson told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Journal previously, although additional jobs could potentially be added.
