COON RAPIDS, MN — A tornado traveled about 3 miles Wednesday night through the northern Twin Cities metro area, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado, which brought winds of up to 80 mph and was about 50 yards wide, first touched down at 8:27 p.m. Wednesday on the northeast side of Coon Rapids, the National Weather Service tweeted Thursday afternoon.

A damage survey categorized the tornado as EF-0, the lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which measures wind speeds.

EF-0 tornadoes have winds between 65 mph and 85 mph and typically cause light damage, including damage to chimneys, broken tree branches and some uprooted trees, according to the National Weather Service.

A meteorologist from Mexico was killed and four others were injured Wednesday in a three-vehicle crash while storm-chasing.
