2025 Minneapolis Mayor’s Race Guide: Frey, Fateh, And More

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minneapolis voters will choose their next mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in a ranked-choice election that includes a crowded field led by incumbent Jacob Frey and State Sen. Omar Fateh.

Residents can rank up to three candidates on their ballot. The city’s mayoral race comes as Minneapolis continues to navigate major changes in housing, safety, and infrastructure policy.

Jacob Frey (Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party)

Frey, first elected in 2017, is seeking a third term. His campaign emphasizes stable leadership, crime reduction, and affordable housing growth. Frey points to measurable declines in violent crime and a significant increase in deeply affordable housing production since taking office. He has the backing of major unions, Gov. Tim Walz, and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Omar Fateh (Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party)

Fateh, who represents District 62 in the Minnesota Senate, is running on a progressive platform centered on housing, labor rights, and police reform. His campaign criticizes Frey’s record on homelessness and public safety while calling for “a city that works for everyone.”

Feteh has the backing of major unions and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar.

  • Voting Method: Ranked-choice voting (up to three rankings per office)
  • Polls Open: 7 a.m.–8 p.m.
  • Absentee Voting: Began Sept. 19, 2025
  • Write-in Filing Deadline: Oct. 28, 2025

Under Minnesota’s 2023 Restore the Vote Act, residents with felony convictions regain their right to vote once they are no longer incarcerated. To vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days.

Voters can register online or in person on Election Day.
