Fattest US Cities: How Minneapolis Measures Up

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A new study from WalletHub ranks Minneapolis among the least overweight cities in the United States, placing it at 95th out of the 100 metro areas they analyzed.

The study examined obesity rates, health consequences, and access to healthy food and fitness opportunities across the country.

While many U.S. cities struggled with high obesity rates and related health challenges, Minneapolis fared well, ranking in the bottom ten for overall weight-related issues.

According to the report, Minneapolis scored 84th in obesity prevalence, 92nd in health consequences, and 90th in food and fitness accessibility, meaning the metro area has relatively low obesity rates and better access to healthy lifestyle options compared to much of the country.

In contrast, McAllen, Texas, was named the most overweight city, with high obesity and inactivity rates, while Honolulu, Hawaii, ranked as the least overweight.

For Twin Cities residents, these findings reinforce Minneapolis' reputation as a city with a strong focus on outdoor activities, fitness culture, and access to healthy food.

However, health experts emphasize that maintaining these advantages requires continued investment in public health initiatives, nutrition programs, and recreational infrastructure.
