These MN Construction Projects Will Impact July 4 Travel: List

TWIN CITIES, MN — Minnesota drivers across the state will likely encounter one of the over 200 ongoing construction projects when they head out for the July 4 weekend.

Though work will be suspended over the July 4 holiday at most projects, the work zones will remain in place.

Transit officials are asking that drivers follow the speed limits as they approach slower traffic, narrow lanes, lane shifts, detours, and delays that are common in work zones.

Here are some of the major highway projects that will impact travel this weekend, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation:

Northern Minnesota

  • I-535/Blatnik Bridge in Duluth – Reduced to a single lane in each direction.
  • Highway 194 in Hermantown – Detour. Highway 194/Midway Road intersection is closed. Watch for lane shifts and lane closures at the Highway 194/Highway 53 intersection. Get detour map.
  • Highway 37 at County Road 7 in St. Louis County – Highway 37 is reduced to 35 mph speed limit with narrow, temporary lanes. St. Louis County Road 7 is closed to through traffic south of Highway 37 to Highway 16.

Central Minnesota

Southern Minnesota

Twin Cities

  • Highway 10 in Anoka – Reduced to one lane in each direction between Sunfish Lake Boulevard and Seventh Avenue; watch for several access changes at intersections. Highway 10 is also a single lane in Elk River, about eight miles north of this project.
  • I-94 and I-35E in St. Paul – Lane restrictions and ramp closures.
  • Highway 55 in Minneapolis – Southbound Highway 55/Hiawatha Avenue closed and detoured between Downtown Minneapolis and Cedar Avenue; includes the ramps from southbound I-35W and eastbound I-94.
  • Highway 55 Minneapolis to Inver Grove Heights – Closed in both directions between Blue Gentian Road/Lexington Avenue and Mendota Heights Road. Eastbound Highway 55 closed between Highway 5 and Highway 13.
