Tim Walz On Shortlist To Be Kamala Harris' VP Nominee

ST. PAUL, MN — Gov. Tim Walz is on Kamala Harris's shortlist of candidates to be the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

The Harris campaign has requested vetting materials from Walz and four others, MSNBC reported Tuesday. The two-term governor has grown a national profile during his time as chair of the Democratic Governors Association and as an official surrogate for the Biden-Harris campaign.

In addition to Walz, the other potential picks are:

• North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper
• Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro
• Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly
• Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Political insider David Weigel notes Walz's upsides as a VP include that he grew up in a small town, joined the Army National Guard, was a public school teacher, and helped state Democrats flip the Minnesota Senate in 2022.

Democrats are also praising Walz for how he's gone after Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, claiming that "people like J.D. Vance know nothing about small-town America."

MN Dems Cash In After Biden Announcement

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party broke its previous record 24-hour online fundraising period on Monday, according to party officials.

The funds came in after President Joe Biden announced he would end his presidential campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic nominee.

"Less than two hours after [Sunday's] announcement from President Biden, grassroots donors began flooding the Minnesota DFL with small dollar donations, well before the DFL had sent a single fundraising email or text message regarding the news," the DFL said.

"The last 24 hours were the strongest 24-hour online fundraising period in Minnesota DFL Party history, with over $100,000 raised through digital fundraising alone. Our party and our base are fired up and ready to elect Kamala Harris and to defeat Donald Trump in November."
