2 Educators From Minneapolis Nominated For Teacher Of Year

MINNEAPOLIS — A total of 77 educators were nominated for 2022 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, including several from the Minnetonka area. Eligible candidates for the annual award include teachers of pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade, early childhood teachers, and adult basic education teachers, from public or private schools.

The five nominated from Mineapolis are:

• Edward Barlow, Minneapolis Public Schools
• Aberdeen Rodriguez, Minneapolis Public Schools

"An independent panel of leaders in the fields of education, business, government, nonprofit and philanthropy will read candidates’ portfolios over the next few weeks and narrow the list to a group of semifinalists," Education Minnesota, the teachers union that runs the program, said Monday.

"In March, the panel will convene again and review additional materials from the semifinalists to choose a group of finalists. Because of safety precautions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheduled Minnesota Teacher of the Year banquet, set for May 1 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre, could be postponed."

This year will mark the 58th Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. Natalia Benjamin, a high school English learner and ethnic studies teacher at Century High School in Rochester, was the 2021 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
