Classes Canceled As Minneapolis Teachers Go On Strike

Across the river in St. Paul, teachers and district administrators agreed to a deal and narrowly avoided a strike.

MINNEAPOLIS — All classes were canceled in Minneapolis Public Schools Tuesday as teachers and educators went on strike.

The teachers and district administrators were unable to strike a deal during negotiations, forcing parents to arrange emergency child care for their children.

"We continue to do so much more with so much less," Greta Callahan, president of the teacher chapter of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, said in a news release. "Those at the top of this district continue to horde power, continue to do so much less with so much more, and if we don't intervene, Minneapolis Public Schools will cease to exist."

Sticking points during negotiations in Minneapolis included higher wages, smaller class sizes, and more staffing in the area of student mental health support.

"While it is disappointing to hear this news, we know our organizations’ mutual priorities are based on our deep commitment to the education of Minneapolis students," the district said in a statement.

"MPS will remain at the mediation table non-stop in an effort to reduce the length and impact of this strike."

During the strike, one meal bag with one breakfast and lunch per student will be available for pick up daily at school starting on Wednesday. Parents should check for specific pick-up hours at their school.
