Richfield Mayor Addresses Homecoming Football Game Shooting

"Our community has been experiencing a range of emotions, from heartbreak and overwhelm to fear and confusion," the mayor acknowledged.

RICHFIELD, MN — Richfield Mayor Maria Regan Gonzalez says efforts are underway "to find tangible ways to ensure that our families and students feel safe" following recent events at Richfield Public Schools, including two people being shot during the school's homecoming football game on Friday.

"Over the past few days our community has been experiencing a range of emotions, from heartbreak and overwhelm to fear and confusion," Gonzalez said in a statement released Tuesday.

"But into that fear and confusion we have also received an outpouring of love and support for our families and students."

Police say they arrested two juveniles in connection with the shooting.

Richfield officers arrested a 15-year-old boy who is the suspected shooter, authorities said. The teen is a current Richfield High School student, according to police.

Additionally, a 16-year-old boy who used to attend Richfield high school was arrested early Saturday morning in Edina, authorities said. The boy is "suspected of instigating the altercation," police said.

Following the shooting, on Monday, the school district said it "received online threats against our secondary schools." As a result, the district closed all secondary schools for the day.
