MINNEAPOLIS — State and local authorities are monitoring reports of a TikTok challenge that has encouraged students nationwide to threaten gun violence at their schools on Friday, Dec. 17.

Lakeville schools closed Friday out of an abundance of caution after the district said it received a social media threat overnight.

Other school districts say they've stepped up security and are asking parents to use social media responsibly.
"We want to ask our families and community to please talk with your children about responsible use of social media," Minneapolis Public Schools said in a statement.

"Perpetuating false information and promoting violence is very serious and should not be taken lightly. Social media is a powerful tool and we hope that students will promote positive initiatives that reflect the values of our schools and community."
