Officials ID Two Men Killed In Boating Accident On Big Marine Lake

The bodies of two men were pulled from the Washington County lake after a boating accident Friday, officials said.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MN — Authorities on Monday identified two men who died after a boating accident Friday on Big Marine Lake.

The bodies of Richard Thomas Gannon, 45, of Centerville, and Tony Randall Boyce, 55, of Hugo, were pulled from the lake over the weekend, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday morning. Officials said the cause of their deaths remains under investigation.

Deputies responded just before 2 p.m. Friday to a 911 caller who said boaters were in distress on the north side of the lake in Scandia, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Witnesses there reported two men lost control of a boat shortly after leaving the landing and were thrown into the water, police said.

Several people heard the men calling for help and searched for them in their own boats but could not find them Friday afternoon, police said.

Crews found one man's body shortly after 7 p.m. Friday and searched for the second man's body "well past midnight" before pausing due to weather, according to the sheriff's office. The second man’s body was pulled from Big Marine Lake around 4 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

Neither man was wearing a life jacket when they were found and none were found in the water nearby, officials said.
